SYNOPSIS

Nicky recklessly quits her job and has to deal with the aftermath, as she struggles to provide for her son Kie. She lives with bipolar disorder, alternating between extremes of elation and aggression. She can be confrontational towards others, and impulsively kidnaps a dog that is tormenting her. She is also capable of great tenderness, as we see in domestic scenes that are often subtly funny.

SOUND DESIGN & SCORE

The brief was to represent Nicky’s mental states through sound design, for which we utilised a quiet/loud dynamic. There are many abrupt cuts, thrusting us from one scene to the next. Walking down a residential street becomes a full-blown cacophony. This contrasts with the delicate foley of stroking hair. We hear lots of diegetic sound as Nicky and Kie underscore their lives with cartoons and trashy late night TV.

A single piece of score offers a moment of reprieve in the wake of a violent scene.
